A group of former MPs and senators has pledged over $1 million to a campaign to help Pakistan rebuild democracy following a coup this year.
The Pakistan Election Commission on Thursday endorsed the campaign, which has been launched by former MPs, including former Foreign Minister Khawaja Asif and former National Security Advisor Ajit Doval.
"The PEC would like to encourage both political parties of Pakistan to have an open dialogue, discuss problems and solutions," said Mr Nawaz Khan, the former foreign minister.
"We are hopeful that this campaign will help in fostering a sense of confidence in the political system and the political system is on its way towards a better democracy," Mr Nawaz said in statement.
The campaign includes members of both political parties who said they would be willing to put a lot of money behind the cause.
"We have pledged to take all our power to make that happen," said Asif.
Former lawmaker Nawaz was once seen as the future PM of Pakistan, but after Pakistan's current president, Pervez Musharraf's controversial handling of the country's troubled economy left him in jail, Asif quit politics to contest a House in 2013.
