Sakurajima (Japan) (AFP) - A chemical factory spewed an estimated 120 tons of radioactive materials into a river in one of Sendai prefecture's busiest areas as police tried to determine the source of the leak.

The accident, which has caused dozens of residents to seek shelter from rain in the town's Sendai prefecture offices, is the latest of dozens of incidents since 2011 that have resulted in radioactive contamination.

At least eight people have been seriously affected, said Kiyo Kojima, spokesman for Sendai Prefectural Government and the police.

Officials are investigating what may have occurred, he said.

But police and residents living at a nearby nearby building told AFP that hundreds of tonnes of radioactive material and highly flammable chemicals had been dumped, with residents saying there were no known nearby sources of food, water or fuel.

Several people are being treated for radiation sickness after returning from the hospital where they were treated, Kojima said.
