AUSTIN (KXAN) -- On Tuesday the Travis County Sheriff's Office arrested a suspect in the fatal shooting of a woman in the 3100 block of South Lamar Street, about two hours east of Austin.
The victim was found with four gunshot wounds. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
The suspect fled on foot shortly after the shooting.
At around 2:20pm deputies responded to reports of gunshots in the area of the 600 block of South Lamar and East Peoria streets. As they approached the scene, they were confronted by a man matching the description of the robber, deputies said.
Deputies arrested and charged 24-year-old Carlos Montoya in connection with the shooting. The man told authorities he stole a $1,900 cashmere sweater from a nearby Walmart store and had intended to rob a nearby home. The victim gave him her wallet after they had made the bank teller withdraw the cash and the suspect showed up at the ATM with the sweater. The man took the sweater and left in the SUV before deputies chased him and pulled him into a ditch about 300 feet from where the woman was found.
The suspect then allegedly got into his SUV and fled on foot, according to deputies. He is described as black, 20-30, 5-10 and around 5'11" tall, about 170 pounds with a goatee. Deputies were able to make him take a DNA swab from the victim.
He also showed a fingerprint to investigators but didn't provide a DNA sample.
The suspect has prior criminal history but not shown up for a booking in Travis County.
A KXAN viewer got a glimpse of the suspect from the police scanner. Deputies say he is a suspect in a number of incidents, including thefts of the clothes of family members.
